GIMP (like Photoshop) doesn't open raw files on its own. Some new generation of free photo editing software like PhotoScape X, Pxlr or Fotor are a lot better in many ways than the antic and archaic GIMP and even better than RawTherapee, Photoshop or Lightroom in some ways too, and the day that those new generation of free photo editors will be able to open and process RAW images, this day can be a knock down for Lightroom and RawTherapee. If you're opening them directly in GIMP, you're possibly using UFraw and not realizing it (fwiw there's actually loaders for darktable and RT in newer GIMP versions that will let you develop the raw before bringing it into GIMP).

The RAW program that I recommend for integration with GIMP is RAWTherapee. The GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. There exists a Raw Therapee Mac version, but GIMP is not supported by this platform.
